Commander Spotlight: Lathril, Blade of the Elves - Elf Tribal Powerhouse
Elves are one of Magic's oldest and most beloved tribes. They are fast, synergistic, and snowball out of control when left unchecked. Lathril, Blade of the Elves takes everything great about Elves and adds a game-ending activated ability that does not even require attacking.
Lathril is a 2/3 with menace for four mana. Whenever she deals combat damage to a player, you create that many 1/1 green Elf Warrior tokens. Her activated ability lets you tap ten untapped Elves to make each opponent lose 10 life and you gain 10 life.
The plan is simple: build a board of Elves, pump Lathril's power to create more Elves, and then tap ten of them to drain the table for 10. Between combat damage from your Elf army and repeated activations, three or four drains usually finishes the game.
Why Lathril Works
Lathril solves the biggest problem Elf tribal decks have historically faced: converting a wide board of small creatures into actual wins.
Elves are great at generating mana and filling the board, but individually they are small. A board of twenty 1/1 Elves looks threatening until an opponent plays a 5/5 and you cannot attack profitably. Lathril bypasses this problem entirely. You do not need to attack with your Elves - you just need to tap them.
The token generation from combat damage also scales with power buffs. If you put a +3/+3 equipment on Lathril and hit someone, you make five tokens. With a +5/+5 buff, you make seven. The Elves create more Elves, and the snowball gets out of control.
Key Cards
Elf Lords and Anthem Effects
- Elvish Archdruid - +1/+1 to Elves and taps for mana equal to Elves you control. Easily produces 5-10 mana.
- Imperious Perfect - +1/+1 to Elves and taps to create an Elf token.
- Dwynen, Gilt-Leaf Daen - +1/+1 to Elves and gains life when you attack.
- Elvish Champion - +1/+1 and forestwalk to all Elves. If any opponent has a Forest, your Elves are unblockable.
Mana Dorks
Elf decks run mana dorks not just for ramp but as bodies for Lathril's activated ability. Every mana dork is also a potential member of your "tap ten" team.
- Llanowar Elves / Elvish Mystic / Fyndhorn Elves - The classic 1-mana dorks. Run all of them.
- Priest of Titania - Taps for mana equal to all Elves on the battlefield (including opponents').
- Marwyn, the Nurturer - Gets a +1/+1 counter whenever you cast an Elf spell, and taps for mana equal to her power. Only triggers on cast, not on tokens entering or reanimation, but she grows fast in an Elf-heavy deck.
- Circle of Dreams Druid - Taps for mana equal to creatures you control.
Token Generators
More Elves means you reach the "tap ten" threshold faster.
- Lys Alana Huntmaster - Creates a 1/1 Elf whenever you cast an Elf spell.
- Wolverine Riders - Creates a 1/1 Elf Warrior token at the beginning of each upkeep. Whenever another Elf enters under your control, you gain life equal to its toughness.
- Elvish Promenade - Creates 1/1 Elf tokens equal to the number of Elves you control. Doubles your board.
- Tyvar Kell - Planeswalker that creates Elf tokens and gives them deathtouch.
Power Boosters for Lathril
Cards that increase Lathril's power to generate more tokens on combat damage.
- Stoneforge Masterwork - Equipment that gives +1/+1 for each creature sharing a type. In an Elf deck, this can be +8/+8 or more.
- Coat of Arms - Each creature gets +1/+1 for each other creature sharing a type. Your twenty Elves each get +19/+19. Game over.
- Beastmaster Ascension - After seven attack triggers, all your creatures get +5/+5.
- Blackblade Reforged - Equipment that gives +1/+1 per land you control.
Finishers Beyond the Tap Ability
- Craterhoof Behemoth - The classic Elf finisher. Each creature gets +X/+X where X is the number of creatures you control. With 15 Elves, that is +16/+16 to each one.
- Overwhelming Stampede - Gives your creatures +X/+X and trample where X is the greatest power among your creatures.
- Ezuri, Renegade Leader - Overrun effect on a stick. Pay five mana to give Elves +3/+3 and trample. Repeatable.
- Triumph of the Hordes - Gives your creatures +1/+1, trample, and infect. 10 poison kills a player.
Strategy Tips
Lathril needs evasion: Lathril has menace, which helps, but determined opponents can still block her. Add evasion equipment or effects: Rogue's Passage, Whispersilk Cloak, or Trailblazer's Boots.
Do not overextend into board wipes: Elf decks are vulnerable to Wrath of God. Hold back some resources when possible. Cards like Heroic Intervention, Wrap in Vigor, and Tyvar's Stand can save your board.
Tap ability is at instant speed: You can tap your ten Elves at any point, including during opponents' turns. This means you can tap them after blocking or in response to a board wipe.
Untap effects are powerful: Cards that untap your creatures let you tap them for mana AND for Lathril's ability in the same turn. Seedborn Muse, Vitalize, and Mobilize are excellent here.
Prioritize board presence over individual power: A board of fifteen 1/1 Elves is better than three 5/5 Elves in this deck. Lathril wants quantity for her tap ability.
Budget Build Path
Elf tribal is one of the cheapest archetypes to build because most good Elves cost under a dollar.
Under $1 all-stars: Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Fyndhorn Elves, Priest of Titania, Lys Alana Huntmaster, Imperious Perfect, Elvish Archdruid, Beastmaster Ascension.
Worth investing in ($3-10): Ezuri, Renegade Leader, Wolverine Riders, Coat of Arms, Elvish Champion.
Dream upgrades: Craterhoof Behemoth ($30+), Concordant Crossroads ($15+), Seedborn Muse ($10+).
A competitive Lathril deck can be built for $35-50. The preconstructed deck (Elven Empire) is available for under $30 and provides an excellent foundation.
Lathril is a commander who rewards patience and board development. Build your Elf army, protect it from board wipes, and drain the table with your unstoppable tap ability.
