Commander Spotlight: Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver - Zombie Aristocrats
Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver is one of the best tribal commanders in the format because he solves the two biggest problems tribal decks face: running out of cards and running out of creatures. His first ability creates a 2/2 Decayed token whenever a Zombie you control without decayed dies, ensuring your board presence never fully disappears. His second ability lets you sacrifice a Zombie during your end step to draw a card, providing consistent fuel.
This combination of resilience and card draw makes Wilhelt the premier choice for Zombie tribal in Commander.
Why Wilhelt Excels
Most tribal commanders are either anthems (lord effects that boost your creatures) or payoffs (rewards for having lots of your tribe). Wilhelt is neither. He is an engine that keeps your deck running smoothly by recycling resources.
When a Zombie without decayed dies, Wilhelt creates a 2/2 Zombie token with Decayed. That token cannot block and is sacrificed at end of combat if it attacks, but it serves two purposes: it is another body for sacrifice effects, and it is another Zombie for tribal synergies.
The card draw ability is what really puts Wilhelt over the top. At your end step, you can sacrifice a Zombie to draw a card. This means every Decayed token is potentially a card draw. Wilhelt creates the tokens, and then the tokens draw you cards. The engine feeds itself.
Building the Deck
Wilhelt decks blend two strategies: Zombie tribal and aristocrats (sacrifice-based value). Here is how to structure the build.
Zombie Lords and Anthem Effects
Lords make your Zombies bigger and harder to deal with.
- Death Baron - Gives Zombies +1/+1 and deathtouch. One of the best lords.
- Lord of the Undead - +1/+1 to Zombies and can return Zombies from your graveyard.
- Undead Warchief - Zombies cost 1 less and get +2/+1.
- Cemetery Reaper - +1/+1 and can exile opponents' graveyards to create Zombie tokens.
Sacrifice Outlets
Free sacrifice outlets let you trigger death triggers at will.
- Carrion Feeder - Free sac outlet that grows. A 1-mana Zombie that eats other Zombies.
- Grimgrin, Corpse-Born - Sac a creature to untap, gets bigger, kills an opponent's creature.
- Phyrexian Altar - Sacrifice creatures for mana. Enables combo potential.
- Ashnod's Altar - Sacrifice creatures for two colorless mana. Another combo enabler.
Death Triggers
Cards that reward you when creatures die.
- Diregraf Captain - Zombie lord that drains opponents when your Zombies die.
- Plague Belcher - Drains opponents when your Zombies die.
- Vengeful Dead - Each opponent loses 1 life whenever a Zombie dies. Stacks fast with sacrifice loops.
- Gravecrawler - The glue that holds the engine together. Casts from the graveyard as long as you control a Zombie. Combine with a sac outlet for infinite death triggers.
Token Generators
More Zombies means more fuel for the engine.
- Army of the Damned - Creates thirteen 2/2 Zombie tokens. Flashback makes it castable twice.
- Poppet Factory - Transforms to remove Decayed from your tokens, turning them into real threats.
- Headless Rider - Creates a Zombie token whenever a nontoken Zombie dies. Pairs incredibly with Wilhelt.
- Open the Graves - Creates a 2/2 Zombie whenever a nontoken creature dies.
Card Draw Beyond Wilhelt
- Cryptbreaker - Tap three Zombies to draw a card.
- Undead Augur - Draw a card whenever a Zombie dies.
- Midnight Reaper - Draw a card whenever a nontoken creature dies.
- Skullclamp - Equip to any 1-toughness creature (like tokens from other sources) and it dies immediately, drawing two cards. Also pairs well with sacrifice outlets on larger creatures.
Key Combos
Wilhelt enables several powerful combos.
Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + any death trigger payoff: Cast Gravecrawler, sacrifice it to Phyrexian Altar for one black mana, use that mana to recast Gravecrawler from the graveyard. Repeat infinitely. With Diregraf Captain or Plague Belcher on the battlefield, each loop drains all opponents for 1 life.
Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + Wilhelt: The infinite loop generates unlimited Decayed tokens from Wilhelt's death replacement effect, giving you a massive board. You still draw one card at end step from Wilhelt's sacrifice trigger. Pair with a death-trigger payoff like Undead Augur or Diregraf Captain to drain opponents or draw through your deck.
Rooftop Storm + any Zombie creature: Rooftop Storm lets you cast Zombie spells for free. Combined with Gravecrawler and a sacrifice outlet, you get infinite sacrifice triggers without needing Phyrexian Altar.
Strategy Tips
Do not overvalue Decayed tokens for combat: They die after attacking and cannot block. Their primary value is as sacrifice fodder and Wilhelt draw triggers. Attack with them only when the damage matters or when you have no better use.
Sacrifice at the right time: Wilhelt's draw trigger is at your end step. You only get one sacrifice per end step, so choose wisely. Usually, sacrifice a Decayed token (since it dies after attacking anyway) and save your real Zombies.
Protect Wilhelt: Without Wilhelt, your engine stalls. Run Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, and a couple of counterspells to keep him alive.
Graveyard as a resource: Your graveyard is an extension of your hand. Cards like Lord of the Undead, Havengul Lich, and Living Death let you reuse Zombies repeatedly.
Budget Build Path
Wilhelt is very budget-friendly. The preconstructed deck (Undead Unleashed) is an excellent starting point.
Cheap all-stars ($1 or less): Gravecrawler (recently reprinted), Carrion Feeder, Diregraf Captain, Plague Belcher, Undead Augur, Headless Rider, Poppet Stitcher, Skullclamp.
Worth upgrading to ($3-10): Death Baron, Rooftop Storm, Phyrexian Altar, Cryptbreaker.
Skip on a budget: Mikaeus, the Unhallowed (expensive, not essential), Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth (nice but not needed).
A highly functional Wilhelt deck can be built for $30-50 starting from the precon or $50-75 from scratch.
Wilhelt rewards patient, grinding play. Build your Zombie army, sacrifice for value, and drown your opponents in an endless tide of the undead. For help finding the right Zombie synergies for your budget, try Manacove - just tell the AI you want Zombie tribal and watch the decklist come together.
